Singapore Men's Fashion Week
Monday, April 30, 2012
DAY 1 - THE ARRIVAL
After an incredibly long but enjoyable twelve-hour flight, we landed in Singapore and headed straight to the Marina Bay Sands hotel, venue for the Men's Fashion Week shows. Designed by Moshe Safdie Architects, the hotel is famous for it's rooftop infinity pool, which was extremely impressive. Upon arriving we headed up to the roof where we had a light dinner and a few drinks looking out across the city.
DAY 2 - THE FITTINGS
Day two began with a visit to check that our collection had arrived in one piece. Luckily it had and had been hung and steamed to perfection. The show consisted of 30 looks that we felt were a great fit to both show off the brand and be the right presentation for the asian market. The afternoon was spent model casting where we got to see the 17 models we'd handpicked in London the week before. We selected mostly European but also some Asian models to coincide with the show location. After the castings and fittings we sat down with the show team to get our videos (black and white images and videos of the collection's inspirations) and music (a mixture of jazz tracks, naturally) ready for our opening show the next day.
DAY 3 - THE SHOW
Unusually, the day of our show didn't see us doing last-minute preparations but rather I was at the CAN studios for an appearance on Breakfast AM Live. I spoke about the brand and why we'd made the choice to join the Singapore Men's Fashion Week line-up, which seemed to be well-received. Following this we went to more interviews and press visits before we returned for the final walkthrough at the show location. Accompanied by the likes of Se7en and Shawn Yue (two Asian celebrities) we showed our complete collection for Singapore without a hitch - apart from the model that put his waistcoat on the wrong way round - and we saw a great response from our guests. After the show we hotfooted it to a local nightclub where I was hosting an after-party with Songzio (an Asian brand). I also DJ'd.
DAY 4 - THE MARKET RESEARCH
The show was indeed over and now we wanted to explore the city and do some research on the Singaporean market. We visited many of the luxury brand areas of Singapore including the Raffles Hotel. Ostensibly the purpose of going to Singapore was to boost our brand presence in Asia but it was as much of a fact-finding mission as anything. We learnt a lot about the market and it does need serious thought. Having one of my key Savile Row guys was an opportunity to test how we sell in Asia and thankfully it was the right decision to make. The Asian market seems extremely influenced by our celebrity client base as well as the true British look.
DAY 5-7 - THE NETWORKING
The next two days were very heavily '"diary-orientated" with many meetings and dinners with some of the most connected people in Singapore. We wanted to maximize our time in and met with potential partners to scope out whether or not we would ever look at Singapore. I did however get to go for a fantastic meal at the White Rabbit with Chris Lee from Asylum. Dinner was fantastic and provided a bit of an opportunity to escape. The restaurant is situated close to a famous botanical garden and not too far away from the jungle. The environment was serene - a far cry from the hubbub of the last few days.
DAY 8 - THE FINALE
There was more time for play, I'm pleased to say and have just returned from dinner at Esquina Tapas Bar in China town. It's a five-star restaurant, created by Jason Atherton - of Pollen St Social fame. A delightful meal and a great crowd. After a beautiful sunny day, at 36 degrees, I now have to get on with the next show. I've developed a liking for the fashion week environment and now its time to take the brand to the next step with London Collections: Men in June.

DAY SEVEN - The Final DayDressing Owain Yeoman.
It's all non stop in LA. We got a call late last night at 11.30PM and have been conducting final fittings ever since.
The call last night was from P Diddy. We jumped out of the Chateau bungalow and drove up to his house in our Mercedes SLS to drop his ten suits off. Glad that we did as he wore a beautiful Spencer Hart tuxedo at the Oscars whilst he picked up his 'Best Documentary' for Undefeated. In fact, he even called us on his way to the Oscars to thank us and say how much he loved his suit.
It was a great evening for Spencer Hart with Adam Levine, Dylan Truss, P Diddy, Ioan Gruffud, JC Chasez and Benedict Cumberbatch all wearing Spencer Hart on the Oscars red carpet and the Vanity Fair and Elton John's party. In fact, Dylan Truss even got changed at our bungalow before he headed down the red carpet at the Kodak Theatre, accompanied by his date for the night, his mum.
After watching the Oscars from the comfort of our Hollywood base, complete with Billecart champagne and Carounn gin and tonics, we headed out to celebrate and enjoy the atmosphere at the party for The Artist, in the Chateau Marmont garden. What an amazing way to wrap up our trip to Hollywood by celebrating the Oscar success of Jean Dujardin and the makers of the Artist.
Very happy, but also a little sad to leave Hollywood, we headed back to the next day to LAX – heading to London to resume our work at the Savile Row and Brook Street stores. Until next time!
Just because our time in Bungalow 2 is beginning to come to an end, it has not meant that it’s all beginning to slow down. Today, we fitted and completed fifteen looks! Only at the Oscars…
Following hot on Kate Bosworth’s heels, the actress Jena Malone visited us, as did CNN reporter Alina Cho, who both ordered made to measure suits.
Spencer Hart has always had a strong rapport with actors and musicians across the years such as Mickey Madden, but even their teams are getting involved in the action. We had a few managers come in earlier in the week. Today Darin Friedman and Todd Diener popped in for a sharp Spencer Hart suit each.
We also had some visits from those outside of the showbiz world. John Dempsey, the president of Estee Lauder came in for a fitting for a made to measure suit and Dilso De Almeida, restaurateur. Catherine Hayward Fashion Director of Esquire magazine and the editor of Jalouse magazine visited for a glass of Billecart champagne and to check out some of the accessories that we offer.
Today has certainly been a busy day but it’s been a busy week, we even did a last minute midnight dash to P Diddy's house to deliver his tux!
We’ve seen some great talent visit us in Bungalow 2, at the Chateau Marmont such as William Dafoe, Dylan Truss and Rufus Sewell, we wish everyone success at tonight’s Oscars! Until next time..
Owain Yeoman looked fantastic in a midnight blue Spencer Hart suit, which he will wear to the Vanity Fair party on Sunday.
Lots of news coming through of talent wearing Spencer Hart to the Oscars
ceremony. Brad Pitt's stylist let us know he will be wearing a
beautiful midnight blue shawl suit with a v neck from Spencer Hart.
Others include Adam Levine from Maroon 5, and actor Danny Houston as
well as presenter Thomas Hayo both to be wearing classic midnight blue
dinner suits. Musician Dylan Truss will also be wearing a beautiful
skinny peak on Sunday to the academy awards.
After a busy morning of actors coming through the bungalow to collect their suits, including Kate Bosworth who had a women's tailored suit made for her, we found out that the Spencer Hart twitter account, @SpencerHart, has hit 1800 followers.
Lunch in the Chateau, which was a who's of Hollywood today, we had a fitting's for Andre Balazs and Owain Yeoman and we then prepared the bungalow for William Dafoe. William is a big fan of Spencer Hart and we will be making a couple of made to measure suits for him.The coolest hotel proprietor in the world!
There was another big Oscars party at the Chateau tonight which we popped into. The event was surrounded by media and fans lined up outside the bungalows. Oscar fever has definitely set it in! More news tomorrow...
No time today for hangovers after the Spencer Hart party at The Standard's @Smoke&Mirrors.
Today in the bungalow we were visited by Jeanne Yang, who is a top Hollywood Stylist. She works with the likes of Tom Cruise, Christian Bale, Katie Holmes and countless others. She had a look at the new Palm Springs range and picked out a great pair of chinos and polo shirt for Brad Pitt, and took two suits over to Tom Cruises house.
The up and coming director, Rupert Sanders dropped in for a fitting, as did Ioan Gruffudd who left with a stunning black Marcela waistcoat.
We've had quite a few people dropping into the bungalow to pick up something new for the Vanity Fair party on Sunday. Hollywood producer Orian Williams popped in for a fitting in a beautiful midnight blue suit. I often advise clients to choose midnight blue, over black as it photographs much better. Black seems to suck out all the light.
We did indulge in a quick lunch out in the garden at the Chateau Marmont with Rufus Sewell and Taylor Hackford; the President of the Directors Guild of America. Not before we fitted him with a new suit for the Oscars ceremony though.Legendary Hollywood director Taylor Hackford tells it as it is
Business didn't stop after lunch and we had visits from two Hollywood superstar agents; Peter Hess and Jimmy Darmody. Both left very happy with their made to measure suits. Finally, we've just fitted Alex Greenwald, the lead singer for Phantom Planet with a suit and waistcoat. Off to dinner now and then a well deserved rest! Until tomorrow…DAY THREE
Day three in LA and what a day!
We dressed many actors in the bungalow this morning in the lead up to Sunday’s Oscars. Anthony Mandeler, James Purfoy, Danny Houston, Matt Goldman all came in to get fitted, as well as Benedict Cumberbatch dropping by to see us again. We fitted James Purefoy with a black mohair shawl suit which he wore to the premiere of his new film, ‘John Carter’ in Hollywood tonight.
The lovely Kate Bosworth also came in, and we fitted her with fully bespoke jacket and waistcoat that she’ll be wearing during the Oscar week. It’s great seeing women wearing Spencer Hart. We recently finished a jacket for Robbie William’s wife Ayda, and Margot Stilly have also worn Spencer Hart in the past. The excitement at the Chateau continues to build. At lunch we spotted John Malkovich and Kelsey Grammer in the garden and this evening Vanity Fair threw a party next to the Bungalow.
The rest of the day we prepared for our own Spencer Hart party at The Standard’s @Smoke&Mirrors club on Sunset Blvd. It was a great event and the Spencer Hart team mingled with ‘film director and president of the Director Guild of America’ Taylor Hackford, Phantom Planet, Maroon 5, Josh Hartnett and many more. As guests sipped on Caorunn Gin & Tonics, they were also treated to music from very own Nick Hart as he DJ’d throughout the evening. His set included a number of mid century Jazz classics through to early soul and hip-hop. Watch this space for the Spencer Hart album!
Day two at the Chateau and the Oscars buzz has certainly settled on Hollywood. There have been crowds outside the Chateau Marmont all day as the parties are starting and the A-listers continue to flock into town.
Last night Pharrell Williams moved into the Bungalow next door and dropped by this morning to invite us to a party in his bungalow. You don’t even need to leave the Chateau there is so much going on here!
Meanwhile the Spencer Hart bungalow has been a hive of activity, as friend of Spencer Hart, Benedict Cumberbatch, as well as Andre Balazs, visited us to be kitted out in new suits. Following GQ.com singling out Benedict as ‘most stylish’ at the Golden Globes in January, he will again be wearing Spencer Hart at the Oscars on Sunday.
As well as dressing actors, we’ve also been checking in with a few Hollywood agents so headed off to the Beverly Wiltshire hotel for a meeting. The Beverly Wiltshire Hotel is a bit of a Hollywood staple and is where Richard Gere’s character stayed in Pretty Woman.
We then went back to the Chateau garden to eat at the annual Charles Chaplin dinner, finishing off the night off with cocktails at Soho House, Los Angeles.
The Oscars are on Sunday and Spencer Hart are back in Hollywood.
After a great trip in January for the Golden Globes, the Spencer Hart team has again set up in the legendary Chateau Marmont for a week of dressing the leading acting talent for the Oscars. For the Golden Globes, Spencer Hart fitted actors including; Orlando Bloom, Benedict Cumberbatch, Damien Lewis, Dominic West, Jack Huston and Stellan and Peter Skarsgard, making a great start to the Hollywood award season.
We checked into our Bungalow at the Chateau Marmont early this afternoon, and the hotel is already starting to fill up with Hollywood A Listers and their agents. After checking in, we headed down to the Sunset Strip in the Gull-wing for some steak and eggs at the iconic Mel's Drive-In, one of the first drive thru restaurants in Hollywood. After lunch, news from London…we were pleased to hear that Paul McCartney is wearing Spencer Hart on the cover of his new album ‘Kisses on the Bottom’.
It was then back to the Chateau for our first appointment with singer-songwriter John Legend, who we kitted out with five suits and a beautiful velvet jacket. Friends of Spencer Hart, the boys from Maroon 5, were next in to us the Bungalow. They loved wearing Spencer Hart to the Grammys so popped in to say hi, add to pick up a few new things for their wardrobe. We were also joined by Adam Siegel, Producer of the Oscar nominated film ‘Drive’. He had just been to the Writers Guild Awards at the Palladium in West Hollywood. He also was a brand ambassador for the evening sporting his Midnight Blue Dinner Suit.
We then headed up to the Hollywood Hills for a Mercedes photo shoot, what a great view! After a busy first day it was time to chill in the Chateau garden where we shared a few of their best cocktails with the lovely Dame Helen Mirren. Until tomorrow! In the meantime check us out on email@example.com
Accompanied by the tunes of Donald Byrd, Nick Hart cruises through Hollywood’s hills in a Mercedes Gullwing.
SPENCER HART AND THE GOLDEN GLOBES
From Savile Row to Palm Springs, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year...
Monday, January 23, 2012
Day 1 – Palm Springs
Just arrived in Palm Springs for a two day trip in the town that was the hang out and party town of the Rat Pack and also some of the greatest, coolest and naughtiest of Hollywood legends, musicians and players. The modernist cutting edge architecture framed by the desert and the mountains is the inspiration for our new ‘From Savile Row to Palm Springs’ casual and outerwear lines. For this trip we’ve headed straight to the Parker Hotel. The Parker has been Palm Spring’s most iconic places to stay since the 1920s, and its entrance has even inspired a wall in our new flagship store on Brook Street. After enjoying an eggs Benedict in their Norma’s restaurant, and spotting Gary Oldman who is here for the Palm Springs Festival, we headed down to Palm Springs Canyon. The Canyon, is a huge oasis in the desert that was originally inhabited by the Agua Caliente Cahuilla, the native American tribe of the area.
The view was pretty unbeatable up there.
Day 2 – Palm Springs
Early start today as we headed to Frank Sinatra’s Palm Springs home, The Twin Palm Estate for a photo shoot. What an amazing experience and an absolute privilege to see. The outside was an incredible as we expected, those iconic views of the house, pool and surrounding skyline, but it was the interiors that I really fell in love with. The detail was spot on, with the original stereo system in the main room, the floor to ceiling palm tree wallpaper in the maid’s room, and even the shower that Frank built for his son – all three foot tall of it. We spent the day shooting a fashion shoot and my guide to Palm Springs for the Telegraph Ultra Travel magazine. Got some great shots, including a very P-Diddy-esque picture me being shaded by a gorgeous model with an umbrella! Stayed over another night so we could really soak up the Palm Springs atmosphere and the legendary hot spots, which makes this place so special.
Day 3 - LA
After a late breakfast, we hit the freeway and headed West.. destination LA. We are taking Bungalow No 1 at the legendary Chateau Marmont for a week of dressing the nominees for Sunday’s Golden Globes. We’ll be using our Samsung Galaxy Notes to support in measuring up actors that come through our doors this week. With the Bungalow all set, it was off to the Writer’s Room on Hollywood Boulevard for our joint party with Samsung Galaxy Note. The party was to celebrate the British nominees from the Golden Globes, and we created some special cocktails including a Savile Row Mule and a Mayfair 75 to really get the British thing going. We were joined nominee Benedict Cumberbatch, who is a big fan of Spencer Hart and came donning his favourite tailored suit. After the party, we headed back to the Chateau Marmont, where we were invited to Harvey Weinstein’s Golden Globe party. It was pretty much a who’s who of Hollywood and a great start to our week here.
Day 4 - LA
Early start for a day of fittings in the Chateau, with British actor Orlando Bloom first in to say hello and get measured up for Sunday’s ceremony. After a busy morning in the bungalow, I headed to the Chateau garden for something to eat. As soon as we walked in I bumped into my old pal Piers Brosnan so joined him for spot of lunch, before heading to the pool area to do some work in the afternoon (I know it’s a tough life!). Then it was back to the Bungalow for a fitting with Benedict Cumberbatch, He’d only packed two suits for LA so came in to get measured up for a brand new one for his big night. Despite it being a really warm day, it’s easy to forget it is January, and that we are actually in the desert, so we lit the fire in the Bungalow. With Frank playing in the background and the fire roaring it suddenly felt like Christmas again!
After a visit from Taylor Hackford, Helen Mirren’s producer husband, and Damian Lewis, we packed up for the day and went off for dinner at Soho House.
Day 5 - LA
This morning the Spencer Hart team went off to meet some Hollywood agents as well as doing some more fittings. After his father Stellen popped in yesterday for suit, Alexander Skarsgard came into see us in the Bungalow and was kitted out in a great 50’s style cashmere cardigan that was based on an image of Steve McQueen. We’ve also been working on some more women’s tailoring, including a suit for Robbie William’s wife, Ayda. Robbie is one of the main investors for Spencer Hart so it’s great to be making her something really special. After a late lunch, Mickey from Maroon 5 came in to see us with his lovely girlfriend and tried on some of our Palm Springs casual wear, including some classic polo shirts. Much excitement at the Chateau all day as one of the penthouses is hosting a Golden Globe party for W magazine. The Spencer Hart team has been invited, so after wrapping up for the day we will be heading up there for one of their infamous fashion parties, Hollywood style. Updates tomorrow!
Day 6 - LA
Great day yesterday in the Chateau as Hollywood peaked for Golden Globe fever. We had Brit actor Jack Huston in the Bungalow in to collect his suit to wear for the awards, and he looked fantastic. After lunch we were joined by another Brit and old friend of Spencer Hart, Dominic West, who also came in to collect his new suit for the Globes. Dominic joined us for a glass of champagne as we had a bit of respite in the Bungalow before the evening commenced. Damian Lewis was off to the Bafta Tea Party today wearing Spencer Hart.
We then went for some drinks at Soho House LA. The venue, which is on Sunset Boulevard, was only opened six months ago and we really like it. After drinks we headed to Sunset Tower for dinner with the Spencer Hart team and had a great evening and spotted George Clooney having dinner.
Day 7 - LA
Busy day at the Chateau today with all the Brits picking up their suits for the Golden Globes…. Dominic West came in to collect his and stopped for a chat. We were also joined by Spencer Hart investor, Robbie Williams and his wife Ayda who we have just finished tailoring a suit for. P Diddy even swung by in the afternoon for a glass of champagne to check out the Bungalow and have a look through some of the suits we brought with us from London. Brilliant evening for Spencer Hart at the Golden Globes. We had Benedict Cumberbatch, Orlando Bloom, Dominic West and Jack Huston all wearing Spencer Hart tonight! To celebrate the Spencer Hart team went out for a night of parties. First up was the Paramount event, up in the Hollywood Hills… We then went on to the HBO Golden Globes after party with Rufus Sewell and Jack Huston. It was then back to ours where we were also joined by British actress Tilda Swinton for drinks to wrap up the evening nicely. What a week!
